Welcome to IDASA

South Australians with an intellectual disability now have a strong voice, with the formation of the consumer run Intellectual Disability Associations of S.A. (IDASA).

In 2006 the Intellectual Disability Services Council (IDSC) transferred services to Disability SA (DSA). Many within the intellectual disability community have felt inadequately represented in this new service structure as consultation systems have not adequately accommodated representation of those with intellectual disability.

Consequently many people with an intellectual disability and their representatives are marginalised, despite being the largest group within Disability SA (62%). IDASA aims to correct this imbalance, with broad representation from the intellectual disability sector invited to unite under one powerful and professional banner. IDASA and Disability SA are already in significant discussion on representation, self managed funding and innovative accommodation models.

IDASA is committed to delivering consumer driven, client centred, modern and innovative service models that meet international best practice and outcome focused benchmarks. Such an approach will facilitate greater delivery of services and help reduce unmet waiting lists.

IDASA will pursue all options to ensure an equitable voice in the development of national and state disability policy including recognition as entitled to have their advocate's voice accepted ipso facto as the voice of the person with disability. Aligned with the U.N Convention for People with Disability, the IDASA philosophy will aim to work with governments and DSA to explore opportunities for new, innovative, cost efficient and flexible service delivery. Policy will be formed in consultation with IDASA members to deliver services that are representative of choice of members.

Anyone wishing to join this committee or work on IDASA policy groups is welcome.

IDASA is not political. We look forward to your support and a better deal for people with Intellectual Disability.
